01-Pentatonic Minor

This page is for  Beginners (Left side pentatonic Fingering) but if you rehears also the "D#" or "Eb," and try to play along with the YouTube Video by "Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water," I would consider this for Intermediate Players (include right side Fingering, Blue-Notes). All examples are created for the A minor Flute and on this page the melodies and exercises work also for the smallest flute, the A-minor Pocket Flute.

CLICK on pictures to hear audio (mp3) samples!

(You have to allow pop-ups, Yava will place a little window with the mp3 file playing.)

1. EASY IS RIGHT!

The tone "E" is crated by closing the 3 upper tone holes with the left hand.

The Am pocket flute has only 2 wholes and you might have still the leather band on the third whole of your Am Alto flute, but please keep the ring-finger on that leather, wood or open hole!

Blow long and steady tones ...

Create a rhythm ...

Try more and less air flow ...

2. EASY IS RIGHT!

The tone "D" is crated by closing the 3 upper tone holes with the left hand and with the pointer finder of right hand the next lower hole.

Again first play long and steady tones ...

Create a rhythm ...

And now switch between D and E ... create a melody with just this 2 tones: e__ d d    e e d__ e e d d e________

3. EASY IS RIGHT!

The tone "C" is crated by closing the 3 upper tone holes with the left hand and with the pointer and long finger of right hand the next 2 lower hole.

Again first play long and steady tones ...

Create a rhythm ...

And now switch between C, D and E ... create a melody with just this 3 tones: cdec  cdec e__ d__ c_____

4. Now you are ready for playing the lowest tone! And I am not pretending that this tone comes always easy. Just one finger with a little air leek and the flutes sound squeaky.

The tone "A" is crated by closing all 6 holes

Again first play long and steady tones ...

Create a rhythm ...

And now switch between A, C, D and E ... create a melody with just this 4 tones. See the first line of "Sounds like - SMOKE ON THE WATER!"

The original song "Smoke On The Water" has an "Eb" instead of the "E." To avoid copyright infringement, to stick with a clean Pentatonic-Scale and to make the song easier, I chose the "E." The original song by "Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water" is in G minor. If you have a G minor Pocket flute or Gm-Alto-NAF, you can play along with this YouTube Video, using the same finger as above, BUT replacing the "E" with "Eb"! VIDEO Link to YouTube

  5. EASY IS RIGHT! YES, that's our first tone, but now we go upwards the Pentatonic Scale

6. EASY IS RIGHT!

The tone "G" is crated by closing 2 tone holes with the left hand (pointer and ring finger).

Again first play long and steady tones ...

Create a rhythm ...

And now switch between D and E ... create a melody with just this 2 tones: e__ g g    e e g__   e e g g e________

7.

Reaching the full octave, now you can play all tone from low "A" to high "A2." The "2" stays for second octave.

The tone "G" is crated by closing 2 tone holes with the left Just the ring finger closes the whole or keeps the place on the leather band, or with the pocket flute, the ring finger stays on the wood to help stabilize the flute.

And now switch between D and E ... create a melody with just this 2 tones: e g a___    a g e___ ee gg a___

8.

Now you are ready for playing the highest tone, the "C2."! And I am not pretending that this tone comes always easy. You need a little stronger blow to over blow this tone and get the high "C2."

Again first play long/steady tones and then start creating a rhythm, and start connecting this tone with A G and E. See the second line of "Sounds like - SMOKE ON THE WATER!"
