Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827):

Ludwig van Beethoven was a German composer and pianist. A crucial figure in the transition between the Classical and Romantic eras in Classical music, he remains one of the most famous and influential of all composers. His best-known compositions include 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos, 1 violin concerto, 32 piano sonatas, 16 string quartets, his great Mass the Missa solemnis, and one opera, Fidelio ... see WIKI

Why playing Beethoven?

Well, I researched it and discussed it with many scholars, and it does not look good for the beginning student: Beethoven needed the money, but he hated teaching, he hate dealing with the mediocre mind ... he was a genius and he knew it! He was one of the first independent musicians, not employed by the "Blue Blooded" like Goethe and other talented people, selling there geniosity to the dummies and powerful. He left only a view little pieces for the beginning student and focused on the ABSOLUT ART of Music. And he hated it when the ordinary people called his piano sonatas something like "Moonlight Sonata." Its Absolute Art (!!!) and has nothing to do with any "moon" or its 'light," your emotion are your projections and your inability to hear the true content of my (Beethoven's) music. His music is about the struggle between harmony and melody, between modulation and braking rules and fulfilling rules, it's beyond any projected meaning, standing on it's on right. GOT IT? ...

Well, let's play "Für Elise," which Beethoven never published, but luckily got discovered 40 years after his death.
